Description
the Future Circular Collider Conceptual Design Study has started activities with the kick-off meeting at CERN, in February 2014. Although comprehensive of hadron-hadron, lepton-lepton and hadron-lepton collider options, the main emphasis of the Design Study is the long-term goal of a hadron-hadron collider with a centre of mass energy in the order of 100 TeV in a new tunnel of 80 to 100 km circumference This Design Study is explicitly defined as a worldwide effort, welcoming international contributions and collaborations. Context and Scope can be found at http://indico.cern.ch/event/282344/material/3/2.pdf.
One of the key technologies that we will need to address in the Design Study is, not surprisingly, superconducting magnets producing high fields (16 to 20 T), with accelerator quality (100 ppm homogeneity), without forgetting the need for fast cycled magnets suitable for an upgrade of the injector complex, or a booster in the new ring.
As a follow-up of the Hadron Collider session at the Geneva kick-off meeting, and given the unique opportunity to meet at the ASC, we are calling for an FCC Magnet Meeting to present:
• The FCC and the associated magnet program;
• SC magnet R&D directions, targets and opportunities;
• A brief description of the design study EU proposal that we are preparing, and its relation to the overall objectives of the FCC magnet program.
We would like to use this occasion to have news from regional and national programs, find relations, synergies, and possibly define the scope of collaboration. As the program is being formed, we would be pleased to receive your input on specific interest or contributions. Finally, we are planning for a closing round table.
