Introduction
Vacuum arcs are a concern in nearly every vacuum electronic device, consequently are present in a very wide range of applications. Sometimes they form the basis for device operation, but all too often they are the primary failure mode.
Understanding the physical processes of an arc requires the expertise from many disciplines – material science, surface physics, plasma physics, high-voltage systems and radio frequency to name a few.
The purpose of this workshop series is to bring together scientists and engineers from many different applications and disciplines to discuss the latest efforts to understanding of vacuum arcs. We cover theory, simulation and experiments.
The workshop will run from September 2. - 4. 2015 in Saariselkä, Finnish Lapland at Lapland Hotel Riekonlinna, but will be preceded by a half-day mini-school on modeling surface (electrode) evolution processes relevant to electrical breakdown phenomena at the University of Helsinki on September 1, in Helsinki. See the timetable for lecture topics.
Note that the mini-school will be held at the Department of Physics of the University of Helsinki (Physicum, Kumpula campus, Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2a), the different city than the workshop itself! A separate accommodation will be required for the night before the school. The lunch and morning coffee will be served during the mini-school. A bus from the minischool to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport will leave at 3pm.

See the programme for the previous workshops for other possible topics.
Scientific programme
A tentative programme with scheduled sessions is available. The programme is subject to changes according to the distribution of the contributed works. Accepted speakers will be announced at a later date.
Travel and accomodation
Finnair flies daily to Ivalo from Helsinki. Eskelisen linja operates a bus which departs after the arrival of each flight, going towards Saariselkä, and which stops at the hotel (Hotel Riekonlinna). The bus costs 10€.
The mini-school will end in time for participants to take the Sept. 1st 17:00 flight from the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (common transportation will be arranged to the airport). We advise you to book the flights as soon as possible.
Alternatively, it is possible to fly to Kittilä, and take the bus from there to Saariselkä.
It is also possible to arrive via train to Rovaniemi (travel time 10-12h, possible over night) and continue by bus to Saariselkä.
Due to flight schedules the easiest option is to fly back to Helsinki on Sept. 5.
Contact Stefan Parviainen if you need help with travel.
Information about accomodation can be found on the Accomodation page.
Conference outings
Please note the updated information below. As we need to know in advance how many participants we can expect, we ask you to kindly confirm your participation by email to stefan.parviainen@helsinki.fi
Visit to Gold prospector museum
On Friday 4.9 we will visit the Gold prospector museum in the nearby village of Tankavaara (known as "The Gold village"). In addition to visiting the museum, participants can also try panning for gold (you are allowed to keep any gold you find).
Hike in the Urho Kekkonen national park
We will arrange a hike in the Urho Kekkonen National Park along one of the marked hiking routes. Please bring with you comfortable walking shoes if you plan to participate.
