On Wednesday 8th at 19:00 CEST, there will be a public talk from prof. Luciano Rezzolla (Goethe University, Frankfurt & Honorary Andrews Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College Dublin) titled: “The first image of a black hole” External, non-professional public and/or people not attending the conference, need to register for the event at this form, providing a working email address in order to receive permission and ZOOM link to access the event (restricted to max. 500 people). "During the lecture the first image of a black hole obtained by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration will be discussed. In particular, the theoretical aspects that have allowed to model the dynamics of the plasma accreting onto the black hole and how such dynamics was used to generate synthetic black-hole images will be presented. The method of the comparison between the theoretical images and the observations which allowed to deduce the presence of a black hole in M87 and to extract information about its properties will be shown. Finally, the lessons we have learned about strong-field gravity and alternatives to black holes will be mentioned."
