Dark Matter underground and in the heavens - DMUH11

TH Theory Conference Room (CERN)

TH Theory Conference Room

CERN

Description

The Institute aimed at providing the participants with an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the field of Dark Matter. The main goal has been to assess critically what is the state of the art at the end of the 'first round' of searches at the TeV scale (in mid-2011) and to plan the road along promising theoretical and phenomenological directions.

CERN-TH Colloquium - Dark matter annihilation and the CMB 1h TH Theory Conference Room

      TH Theory Conference Room

      CERN

The existence of dark matter has been hypothesized for decades, based on its gravitational effects on galaxies and galaxy clusters, and more recently, by measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy. Even though its gravitational effects are hardly subtle, astrophysicists continue to search in vain for any non-gravitational signs of dark matter. In the case of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) models, the most promising signals come from ongoing annihilation or decay of WIMPs to Standard Model particles. I will briefly review the possible astrophysical consequences of WIMP annihilation, and then concentrate on the most rigorous constraint from astrophysics: the effect of WIMP annihilation on the ionization history of the Universe, as recorded in the CMB. I will present our latest work on a robust, model-independent way of parameterizing these constraints, and show expected bounds from the Planck satellite.

While the cosmological standard model has many notable successes, it assumes 95% of the mass-energy density of the universe is dark and of unknown nature, and there was an early stage of inflationary expansion driven by physics far beyond the range of the particle physics standard model. In the colloquium I will discuss potential particle-physics implications of the standard cosmological model.
