Laptop configuration / CERN services activation

(Please note that you will comply with CERN Computing Rules whenever using or accessing CERN's or School's computing infrastructure.)

During the school you will be using online platforms but additional software needs to be installed on your system.

Minimum Laptop Requirements

Here are the the minimum requirements for your system:

  • Web browser - recent version of one of popular browsers: Firefox/Safari/Chrome/Edge needed in order to to use online jupyter/swan notebooks.
  • SSH client - required in order to connect to remote Linux systems.
  • X.Org X windows system - necessary for some of exercises where graphical user interface tools running on Linux will be used.

Activation of required CERN services


CERN online platforms used during the school require addtional services activation. 
After your CERN account is activated please visit Resources Portal and subscribe to following services: 

- LXPLUS and Linux (Linux and LxPlus services) 
- EOS/CERNBox (EOS/CERNBox storage)

 

If the system asks to choose a computing group while activating above services, not proposing one by default: please choose the 'it' group.

How to install SSH client?

Linux and MacOS X: come with ssh client packages preinstalled on the system.

 

Microsoft Windows follow instructions to install OpenSSH.

How to install X.Org X Windows system ?

Linux comes with X.Org preinstalled on the system.

 

MacOSX: older versions (10.5-10.7) supply the X11 application, for newer versions - please install XQuartz application or if you prefer its MacPorts version

 

Microsoft Windows: free alternatives include Cygwin/X and VcXsrv, paid for commercial options are XWin32, Xming and many more.
