Description

Overview:

The lecture week "Next generation particle detectors" will take place at the University of Bergen from 10th to 14th of June 2024, in a joined event with guest students from Heidelberg University. We will have several lectures on particle detector technologies for the future in high-energy physics. Furthermore there will be a hands-on session on machine learning and FPGA&VHDL, as well as a guided tour to the old Van de Graaff accelerator and dinner.

Topics:

  •  Future of high-energy physics
    • Hans-Christian Schultz-Coulon, Heidelberg University
  •  Quantum sensing
    • Lasse Vines, University of Oslo
  • 3D-integration
    • Hoang Vu Nguyen, University of South-Eastern Norway
    • Phillipp Haefliger, University of Oslo
  • Ultra-fast timing detectors
    • Lorenzo Paolozzi, University of Geneva
  • Future of calorimetry
    • Felix Sefkow, DESY
  • Future of liquid detectors
    • Belina von Krosigk, Heidelberg University
  • Machine Learning hands-on course
    • Tobias Kortus, RPTU Kaiserslautern
    • Alexander Schilling, RPTU Kaiserslautern
  • FPGA VHDL hands-on course
    • Johan Alme, University of Bergen
  • Guided tour at IFT to Van de Graaff and betatron
    • Dieter Röhrich, University of Bergen

Venue

The venue will be the Department of Physics and Technology on the UiB campus (Allegaten 55, room 359). It is close to many hotels as well as to the city center (map):

Travel to Bergen

Bergen is located on the west coast of Norway. The best way to get here is by plane. From the airport (Flesland) there are daily connections, e.g. from/to Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Amsterdam (KLM), Copenhagen (SAS) and Oslo (SAS/Norwegian). Air fares to European destinations start at around 2000 NOK.

From the airport

Bergen Airport Flesland is situated 20 km south of Bergen.

The airport express coach Flybussen departs every 30 minutes (it takes about 30 minutes). A one-way ticket is ~170 NOK. The ticket can be purchased online. For more information about timetable and stops please click the webpage of Flybussen and select the stop you are interested. Main stops are: Bergen Busstasjon, Festplassen (near Byparken), Torget (fish market), Dreggsallmenningen (Bryggen area). The bus driver will announce which destination you arrived at. You can ask him/her information about your stop as well as to announce it.

The Bergen Light Rail Bybanen runs from airport to Byparken (it takes about 40 minutes). A one-way ticket is ~40 NOK. Tickets can be bought from ticket machines, available at each stop. More details about timetable and stops can be found on the webpage of the lightrail operator Skyss
