Abstract

SRCNet — Vision, Progress, and Cross-Community Computing for the SKA Telescope

The SKA Regional Centre Network (SRCNet) is a cornerstone of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory’s distributed science computing model, federating regional centres into a coherent global infrastructure providing user access to data, processing, and analysis.

The SRCNet Project is an international project to deliver the SRC Network, pulling in expertise and data centres from across 15 SKA countries and from within the SKA Observatory itself. Here we will present the progress we have made in the past three years, with particular emphasis on how solutions developed in the high-energy physics community are being evaluated, adopted and extended to meet SRCNet requirements. 

We review the current state of the SRCNet global software stack and the local node deployments that comprise the SRC "Network" outlining the key technical and operational challenges at SKA scale. We conclude with an outlook on upcoming developments as SRCNet moves toward production readiness and early science operations in line with the SKAO's construction and move to operations.

Short bio

Rosie is the Head of the Data Operations group at SKA Observatory and the SRCNet (SKA Regional Centre Network) Project Lead, which is now major project with about 60 full-time-equivalent of personnel and with a developing federated network of data centres aiming to enable SKAs scientists to access and analyse the challenging data products that the SKAO’s two telescopes will produce.

Prior to starting work at SKAO in 2017, Rosie was the Project Scientist in the Science Data Processor consortium for the SKAO. Going back further in time, Rosie spent two decades at Cambridge University as a student and post-doctoral researcher and teacher, mostly working on SKA (including site selection work and costing estimates). She has a first class degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in Physics, and a PhD in Radio Astronomy, using the Very Large Array, Merlin and the VLBA as well as numerous optical telescopes. In addition, just after PhD, Rosie spent some hilarious time working as a consultant physicist at a technology consultancy, exploring hairspray and asthma inhalers amongst other bizarre things you don't really need a PhD for, before coming back to academia to support the development of major observatories, which is harder but more rewarding.
