Description
NetDRIVE (NetZero Digital Research Infrastructure Vision and Expertise) [1] is the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) project developing plans and expertise to tackle NetZero issues around the UK’s government funded research computing or digital research infrastructure (DRI). Following on from the UKRI DRI NetZero Scoping project [2], NetDRIVE is a £4M project spread over the course of 2.5 years aiming to provide authoritative plans, guidance and expertise to UKRI to shape future policy, process, funding and other activities across the DRI landscape to pursue NetZero targets by 2040 or earlier.
The UK’s contribution to WLCG, is the UKRI funded GridPP collaboration, and as such the outputs of NetDRIVE will be pertinent to GridPP and of interest to the wider WLCG community.
Here we introducethe scope, structure and objectives of NetDRIVE and provide details of its current ongoing activities. This includes the work of the NetDRIVE Champions; the thirteen funded community-led projects spanning compute, storage, data, software and operations; and the three working groups focused on metrics, procurement, and training materials. Together, these activities address both technical and socio-technical aspects of decarbonising research computing.
Preliminary outcomes of these activities are presented along with plans to translate these findings into practical recommendations supporting progress towards more sustainable and energy-efficient digital research infrastructure.
