European Neutrino Meeting LBNF/DUNE
Description
DUNE has emerged as a truly international collaboration formed by a global community willing to pursue accelerator-based long-baseline oscillation physics with the 1.2MW high-power proton source upgradeable to 2.4 MW at Fermilab, a large underground liquid argon Far Detector with a fiducial mass of 40 kton located at the Sanford Underground Facility (SURF) and a highly capable Near Detector System.
The meeting will focus on the physics programme of LBNF/DUNE and the challenges in the design and construction of the detectors and facility. LBNF will be a Fermilab hosted project with international participation to provide beam and facilities for DUNE. The DUNE Collaboration will build and operate the near and far detectors. The goal is to start excavation of the underground facility in South Dakota in 2017 and begin science exploitation by 2026 with the long-baseline beam, at least 20 kton of far detector mass and a near detector.
The meeting will focus on medium and long-term opportunities for European scientists and engineers to participate in LBNF/DUNE. In particular, large-scale prototypes being constructed at CERN ready for data in 2018 offer immediate opportunities for hardware and/or intellectual contributions. The meeting will also discuss the formation of international partnerships to contribute to the different aspects of LBNF/DUNE.
