The Workshop and associated Public Events on the topic “Ions for cancer therapy, space research and material science” are highlighting the increasingly important interface between physics and its applications. They are inspired by the wish to enhance awareness of a broader community, including scientists and the general public, on the benefits for society as a whole resulting from fundamental research, with emphasis on cancer therapy, also covering space research, material science and related subjects. In particular, the Workshop aims at providing the opportunity to scientists of related disciplines to exchange ideas and identify synergies that would facilitate progress of common aims.
The Workshop will take place from 28th to 30th August 2017 at the Great Arsenali Conference Center, located in the old Venetian harbour of Chania on the island of Crete, Greece.
The Public Events are also hosted in Chania at the area of the old harbour:
on 26 of August - science fair at Neorio Moro;
on 27 of August - public talks at Great Arsenali;
on 30 of August - coffee with scientists at Neorio Moro.
Over recent decades, many important developments have been built on either basic physics principles or the tools developed to conduct physics research. Notable examples are diagnostic and therapeutic techniques such as particle therapy or innovations in space and material sciences. Gathering researchers from all over the world in the unique, inspiring setting of the island of Crete will contribute to defining common goals in this direction. The ultimate objective is to use this diverse cultural background as the basis for innovation and vision.
