Saturday 26 August 2017
10:00 - 15:00 "Hands On" Science Fair at Neorio Moro

(see the poster here)

The aim of this event is to acquaint general public, especially schoolchildren and teachers, with the applications of physics in everyday life and alternative approaches to introducing physics and related sciences. Special emphasis is given on the benefits of fundamental research to society.

  • Simple physics experiments: a demonstration by scientists from various research institutions
Moderators: Prof. Tasos Liolios (Aristotle University of Thesalloniki), Grigorii Feofilov (Saint Petersburg State University), Radek Pleskac (GSI), Nikos Kalithrakas (Technical University of Crete), Katerina Foka-Sandoval (Ecole Polytechnique federale de Lausanne), Alexandre Gumberidze (GSI)

  • Project demonstration of Curiosity High School Team  (Dominikos Theotokopoulos School, Gaziou),
placed 10th position in the competition of CERN Beamline for Schools 2017

  • Seminar for teachers on alternative methods and resources for teaching physics by
Prof. Christina Kourkoumeli (University of Athens, Researcher at CERN, Coordinator of European Outreach programs)

  • Masterclasses for teachers and students:
    1) Analyse real data from the LHC accelerator and the ATLAS experiment with the HYPATIA software which was developed at the University of Athens and used by students around the world.
Moderators: Prof. Christina Kourkoumeli, Stylianos Vourakis, Nikolaos Tsirintanis (Researchers at the University of Athens)
    2) Analyse LHC data from the ALICE experiment - looking for strange particles

Moderators: Dr. Małgorzata Janik (Warsaw University of Technology)

  • Photo exhibition presenting CERN "27 kilometers - 27 photographs"

  • Exhibition of children's paintings - how they see big science.

  • Children's corner: puzzles, memory games, videos, cartoons and materials that help children approach particle physics in different ways.
