Discussion for European Strategy Update for Particle Physics (ESUPP)
There will be a special discussion session during DIS2018 in Kobe for a 10-page document to be submitted to ESUPP. The session is on Tuesday 17 Apr 2018 from 16:30 (9:30 in CET) in room 501 as a part of the parallel sessions of DIS2018 (no other meeting forseen during this session). The meeting will be audio-transferred through CERN Vidyo service (click here for auto-joining the meeting).
The session is chaired by Aharon Levy.
More detailed description below:
Dear DIS member (registered and not-yet registered),
We are a community that studies the structure of the nucleon, parton distribution,
spin, QCD studies and high density dynamics in the nucleon and nuclear matter.
Bjorken gave all these a global name of hadronic studies. Looking at the 17 points
mentioned in the final document of European Strategy Update for Particle Physics
(ESUPP) of 2013, you will find no mention of any of the hadronic subjects listed
above. If we want our voice to be noticed by the present ESUPP, we would like to
unite our hadronic community by pointing out the complementarity of each of our
future projects to answer some basic question that our community is engaged with.
To this end, we will have a special session at the DIS2018 meeting in Kobe
dedicated to the coming ESUPP. We would like to present a united front of our
community in a ten-page document to be agreed upon by all and submitted to the
ESUPP committee by the end of 2018.
Yuji succeeded to clear Tuesday afternoon (April 17, 16:30 - 19:00) for a session
that all groups can attend. It is officially organised by the conveners of WG7. A panel
of six people was put together, each representing a subject, as follows:
EIC - Bernd Surrow (surrow@temple.edu)
LHeC - Max Klein (mklein@hep.ph.liv.ac.uk)
VHEep - Allen Caldwell (caldwell@mppmu.mpg.de)
FCC - David d’Enterria (dde@cern.ch)
QCD Theory - Jianwei Qiu (qjianw@gmail.com)
Heavy Ion Theory - Nestor Armesto (nestor.armesto@usc.es)
It is expected that the panel members stress the complementarity of the projects, i.e.
how a given science project complements the others assuming they will all happen.
Each member will point out what basic question(s) can be studied in the suggested
project. We would also like to get a time-line and an estimated price tag. The panel
will be moderated by me. Each panel member will have at most 10 mins to present
his project. There will be ample of time for discussions.
For the discussion I would like to ask you to prepare questions which you think are
relevant and preferably send them in advance (latest by April 15, 2018) to the
appropriate panel member (with CC to me (aharon.levy@cern.ch)). We would like to
have as many participants as possible and the organisers will make an effort to set
upon an audio system for remote participation.
This panel discussion will be audio taped and it will become the basis of the tenpage
EPPSU document covering all the interesting science of our hadronic
community. The final document will be circulated among the whole community for
comments. A special group will be set up to edit the material to a final agreed-upon
document to be submitted to the ESUPP.
I hope to see as many of you as possible in Kobe.
Best regards,
Aharon
