Description

Abstract: Quantum communication studies the encoding and decoding of quantum information in photons and their transmission over a distance. In this talk, the main applications of quantum communication will be presented, especially Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which exploits the laws of quantum physics for generation of a secret key between two parties. The evolution of QKD protocols over time and the main practical challenges will also be discussed.

Lecturer: Guilherme P. Temporão got his PhD degree from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and started working on quantum communications in 2004, in the Group of Applied Physics in the University of Geneva. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of PUC-Rio. He is one of the main researchers in the Rio Quantum Network project, which will establish a metropolitan quantum key distribution network in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the next few years.
