Evening in NYC: Self-Guided Excursion
In lieu of a traditional excursion, we are giving ACAT attendees the opportunity to go into New York City for the evening.
Getting There
The Tuesday session ends at 13:10 (1:10 PM) and we will give people who asked for it a ticket for the LIRR.
The train to NY leaves at 14:11 from the Stony Brook Station. The station is a 20-minute walk from the Wang Center or a 10-minute shuttle ride. Box lunches will be available, and you will be able to eat them on the train.
Train itineraries to both Grand Central Terminal and NY Penn Station are below. Both options arrive in NYC a bit after 16:00 (4:00 PM).
ATTENTION: The ticket you will be provided at the conference (if you filled the survey and asked for it) will be bringing you to Grand Central Station (change in Huntington). The ticket is valid only for the 14:11 train from Stony Brook (you can take any train on the return but must board that exact train). A conductor will make sure that you transfer at Huntington to get to Grand Central. You can come back via any train you wish but to us ethe ticket we will give you, the departure time is fixed. As you arrive at Grand Central, take a minute to look at this iconic spot (part of many movies) but you can alwasy have a look when you return as well.
Getting Back
The time is your own. Trains back from Grand Central and NY Penn are listed below. This shows the last train of the day. There are other trains the next day (just remember the Wedednesday sessions start at 9:00 / AM)
Things To Do
The time is your own. Here are some ideas, but it’s far from a comprehensive list.

Broadway: There is a lot to choose from: Tickets (expensive)
Walks:
· The High Line: A former elevated rail platform that is now an art park and garden. This is closest to NY Penn and open until 8 PM (free and well worth the walk). If you start from the North entrance and end in the South, you may consider visiting the Chelsea market or Little Island.
If you start from the south and end up North, then also consider visiting the Hudson yard and consider booking a visit to The Edge.
· Central Park: Famous NY park. This is closest to Grand Central (free)
· The Brooklyn Bridge: Iconic landmark. Easiest reached by subway (free)
Architecture:
· Hudson Yards and The Edge: Highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere, it is a protruding 100-stories-high observation deck, with a glass floor, bar & 360-degree NYC views near the Hudson yard. The Edge closes at 10 PM. Closest to NY Penn ($40 but check tickets only as tickets could be acquired for 10$ less).
