This event is the first General Training of the MEDICIS-Promed network. It will be dedicated to two topics:

  • Fundamentals of nuclear physics
  • Advanced materials

The training will be completed with transferrable skills and presentations on each work package by the ESRs.


MEDICIS-Promed is a Horizon2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network dedicated to the production and research around novel medical radioisotopes.

      The new, exciting field of 2D materials has seen exponential growth since the isolation of graphene, a single atomic layer of carbon atoms, at The University of Manchester in 2004. In this session on Advanced Materials the team of Nobel Prize winner Prof Sir Kostya Novoselov, based at The National Graphene Institute in Manchester, will provide an introduction to advanced materials such as graphene, tungsten disulphide and a range of other 2D materials. ESRs will gain an understanding of the world of 2D atomic materials, including their properties and characteristics, how 2D materials are produced, and their potential applications. The session will cover:
      1) Electronic and optical properties of graphene
      2) Mechanical properties of graphene
      3) Permeation properties of graphene membranes
      4) Methods to grow graphene
      5) Materials beyond graphene
      6) Van der Waals heterostructures: physics and applications

        PET scanning of ocular melanoma after proton therapy

        The Proton Therapy Facility at TRIUMF is in routine operation treating ocular tumours using 74 MeV protons extracted from the 500 MeV H- cyclotron. Proton therapy results in the activation of the irradiated tissue and provides an opportunity for in-vivo verification via the measurement of irradiation induced activity. The activity distribution resulting from these irradiation induced positron emitters is measurable through post-therapeutic positron emission tomography (PET) scans. The feasibility of using PET as a verification tool for eye treatment is being investigated in this project. A lucite target and a 3-D printed eye were irradiated with a pristine/raw Bragg Peak (RBP) and a Spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP). The isotopic activity inside the targets was calculated with Monte Carlo codes GEANT4 and FLUKA and validated with data from PET scanners taken 15 minutes after end of beam (EOB).

        ISOLTRAP the mass measurement tool of ISOLDE/CERN and its power to enhance the radio isotope production for medical purposes

        The ISOLDE facility at CERN provides a wide choice (>1000 different radioisotopes) of mass-separated ion beams. These serve a variety of disciplines, including radiochemistry, radiobiology and preclinical studies for nuclear medicine. Recently the quadruplet of terbium (Tb) isotopes covering all modalities of nuclear medicine gained considerable interest [1]. Neutron-deficient lanthanide isotopes such as 149,152,155Tb are produced at ISOLDE by 1.4 GeV proton induced spallation of tantalum foil targets. The radionuclides diffuse out of the 2000 °C hot target and are surface or laser ionized, accelerated to 30-60 keV and mass separated. Due to the chemical similarity of the lanthanides the separated beam is not mono-isotopic but also contains isobars of the selected mass plus sidebands of oxide ions 16 mass units less. Most of these are radioactive with different half-lifes and a wealth of gamma rays which renders difficult a quick on-line assessment of the beam composition by gamma ray spectrometry.
        We present a new tool for this purpose, the so called multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-ToF MS) [2] which is used at the high-resolution mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP [3]. With the support of the spectrometer it is possible to analyse the composition of the collected beam immediately and vary the production parameters in order to enhance even more the purity of the isotope of interest.
