Public Lecture

A public lecture will take place in CERN's Globe of Science and Innovation on the evening of Tuesday 18th September. The speaker will be Prof. Marco Durante, the Director of the Biophysics Department at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (Darmstadt, Germany) www.gsi.de/biophysik .

Lecture Title: Heavy ions in therapy and space

Description: Heavy ion biophysics is an emerging research field with two main applications: cancer radiotherapy and space radiation protection. Both fields are rapidly growing. Particle therapy is generally acknowledged as a cutting edge methodology, and over 60 centers worldwide are treating cancer patients with high energy protons or carbon ions. On the other hand, the commitments of the space agencies toward exploration make urgent to tackle the problem of radiation exposure, a potential showstopper for manned colonization of the Solar system. Both particle therapy and space radiation fields share many common topics, such as late effects of charged particles, shielding and radioprotectors. We will show how research in this field can both improve cancer therapy and make possible the human mission to Mars.
