Description

The WLCG Tier-0 Accounting service provides accounting information for scientific computing resources at CERN (Batch, HPC, and BOINC). The service delivers essential information on CPU and walltime usage, which plays a key role in decision-making and planning processes for CERN resource managers across experiments and departments. It also supplies monthly usage data to the WLCG Accounting system.

The Tier-0 Accounting service has delivered reliable performance since 2019, but as a home-grown legacy application, it raises long-term sustainability and maintenance concerns. Its functional scope is limited to a single processing workflow and does not support straightforward data reprocessing. Furthermore, the lack of integration with visualization tools has proven restrictive for debugging and for analysing usage patterns. These limitations motivate a transition toward more standard and widely adopted technologies.

This contribution describes the migration pathway leading to the adoption of the Auditor tool for feeding the WLCG Accounting system, as well as the introduction of standard technologies—such as Hadoop/Spark and OpenSearch—for data reprocessing and visualisation.
