Description
The field-theoretical S-matrix approach to neutrino oscillations assumes that the initial and final particle states are wave packets, which are superpositions of plane waves, and treats the neutrino as a purely virtual particle, propagating over macroscopic distances. Neutrino oscillations arise from the interference of the macroscopic Feynman diagrams with intermediate neutrinos of different masses. A duality is established between the modified neutrino propagator and the effective neutrino wave packet evolving with time and distance. It is shown that the classical inverse-square law can be violated on short but macroscopic baselines. Data from short-baseline (SBL) reactor antineutrino experiments and from experiments with artificial neutrino sources in radiochemical solar neutrino detectors qualitatively confirm this possibility.
