Description
We review the evidence of the applicability of hydrodynamics in small systems and argue that it poses a challenge to the microscopic theories from which hydrodynamics in heavy ion collisions is usually derived.
We then argue that Gibbsian statistical mechanics, together with local Lorentz symmetry, could yield to a formulation of fluctuating hydrodynamics whose applicability is not constrained by usual requirements of many degrees of freedom and molecular chaos.
The applicability of hydrodynamics is then related to the applicability of the statistical model, which is also apparent even in e-e collisions.
Extensions of this theory to spin hydrodynamics, diffusion and curved spacetimes are discussed.
