Description

GIF++ (Gamma Irradiation Facility) is a multiuser facility operated at CERN to test particle detectors under realistic radiation and background conditions expected at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). Combining a high-intensity 137Cs gamma source (10.5 TBq) with adjustable filters to vary the intensity and a high-energy muon beam (about 100 GeV/c).
A cosmic trigger to GIF++ is being developed, which will be essential to test detectors during the LS3 (Long Shutdown 3). LS3 is the period during which the accelerator complex will be shut down for more than three years (August/2026 until June/2030) to upgrade the machine for the HL-LHC (High Luminosity-LHC). This project includes simulation, design, and construction of the system from scratch. The path to this development starts from simulation, understanding the available detectors, and geometric acceptance, to understand the largest possible area covered, to the assembly and commissioning of the system. After this phase, testing, data collection, and analysis will be done. The idea is to allocate chambers at an angle to receive cosmic radiation, allowing electronic validation and detector testing in this environment. LHC experiments will use this new system during LS3, justifying the construction and testing before the shutdown.
