Description
The ATLAS experiment is taking data during LHC Run 3 while preparing a number of important upgrade tasks. The detector is, not only one of the most important tools for particle physics discoveries but also an important showcase to present science and engineering to students of different levels.
ATLAS researchers take part on outreach activities, in particular, in the very long standing programme of Virtual Visits since 2010. Profiting either from the open space exhibiting detector parts beside the ATLAS Control Room or directly from the experimental cavern, a video-conference session is established between a reasearcher in loco and the classroom or event venue anywhere in the world. Beyond physics, topics in engineering, detector construction and performance, computing and even machine learning are discussed with the students.
A large number of Virtual Visits were performed with Brazilian institutes, accumulating more than one hundred visits from 2019 to 2025. These efforts are highlighted in ATLAS’ recent publications on its Virtual Visit programme. Here, the mechanism to announce and attract new Brazilian institutes, the development of the visits themselves, as well as the impact of the Virtual Visits in Brazil, are discussed taking the accumulated experience as a starting point.
