Description

The 5th DRD1 Collaboration Meeting is being organized. A full week for the community to present and share their scientific and technological research activities and achievements is being prepared.

WORKING GROUPS SESSIONS

Please get in touch with the Working Groups conveners if your group plans to contribute.

TOPICAL WORKSHOP

Please note that on Wednesday 18 the meeting will host a topical workshop, “Towards Sustainable Gas Mixtures for Future Detectors” organized by the Working Group 3 Conveners.

The aim of the workshop is to provide an overview and foster discussion on regulatory, safety, and operational challenges related to gas mixtures for detectors used in HEP and beyond. Topics include emerging regulations (e.g., PFAS, flammability), safety concerns, procurement and cost issues, and technical strategies such as gas recycling and eco-friendly mixtures. The workshop also aims to promote collaboration among DRD1 researchers, gas suppliers, chemists, and environmental experts to develop sustainable solutions for detector operations.

WORK PACKAGES

We would like to use the Collaboration Meeting as an opportunity to view at the scientific activities across the DRD1 Work Packages. Dedicated time will be reserved to each WPs.

While the official WP start will follow the endorsement process, many institutes are already contributing to the research lines outlined in the DRD1 proposal.

The meeting will be a key moment to share progress, align on next steps, and strengthen collaboration across the community—also in view of the upcoming WP endorsements and the DRDC review in November.

If needed, a CERN visitor pass can be requested by completing the registration form.

Anna, Beatrice, Eraldo, Leszek, Maxim, and Piotr

Multi-purpose Time Projection Chamber (MTPC) Signal Simulation Method and Experimental Verification 20m

The Multi-purpose Time Projection Chamber (MTPC) prototype has been successfully developed and commissioned at the CSNS Back-n white neutron beamline. Its primary design objective focuses on precise measurement of light charged particle emissions in nuclear reaction, while maintaining versatile capabilities for multiple applications including fission cross-section determination, beam profile characterization, and neutron imaging experiments.
Our research team has conducted a series of beam tests with the MTPC prototype, obtaining preliminary yet significant experimental results.
These initial findings demonstrate the detector's feasibility for conducting neutron-induced nuclear reaction measurements with satisfactory resolution.
To support the development of advanced data analysis algorithms, we have established a comprehensive simulation and analysis framework that integrates the operational principles of MTPC with established open-source tools including Geant4 for particle transport simulations, Garfield++ for drift field calculations, and ROOT for data processing.
This integrated framework enables parametric studies through systematic variation of experimental conditions, generating simulation prediction.
The synergy between experimental verification and computational modeling provides valuable insights for detector optimization and experimental design refinement, particularly in understanding complex signal formation processes within the time projection chamber.

Initial steps towards a computationally efficient neBEM solver 20m

Accurate and efficient computation of electric fields is essential for the detailed simulation of gas detectors, as these fields govern key processes such as particle drift, multiplication, avalanche formation, and signal development. The nearly exact Boundary Element Method (neBEM), integrated with Garfield++, offers a robust open-source framework for electrostatic field computation in complex three-dimensional geometries. However, the computational demands of neBEM, particularly for realistic detector models, present a significant challenge.
In this work, we present initial steps toward enhancing the computational efficiency of neBEM through parallelization using both OpenMP and GPU-based CUDA acceleration.
Performance benchmarks across different computing platforms demonstrate a substantial reduction in execution time, while maintaining consistency and accuracy in field estimates when compared with results from commercial FEM tools. Additionally, dynamic field calculations incorporating space charge contributions have been implemented, laying the groundwork for more realistic and time-dependent detector simulations. These developments represent the beginning of a scalable, high-performance field solver within the Garfield++ ecosystem—crucial for addressing non-linear and evolving phenomena in modern gaseous detectors.

Exploring DHCAL design and performance with Graph Neural Networks 20m

In the context of a gas-sampling Digital Hadronic Calorimeter (DHCAL), we explore the potential of using Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for hadron energy reconstruction and Particle Identification (PID) in future collider experiments. GEANT4 was used to model a DHCAL module and generate datasets for training and testing the performance of the GNNs. The energy resolution for these hadrons is studied in the energy range of 1 – 50 GeV, with a further investigation into the resolution as a function of the incoming particle’s angle and readout granularity, focusing on charged pions. Compared to traditional analysis methods, our results indicate that improved performance can be achieved even with coarser detector granularity, potentially making future DHCAL systems more cost-effective.
