FCC-hh Studies for the next European Strategy: kickoff meeting

The goal of this zoom-only meeting is to set the stage for new studies of the physics programme of the proton-proton phase of the Future Circular Collider, updating and extending the results documented in the Conceptual Design Report,  as input for the 2025 review of the European strategy for particle physics.

The primary targets of the FCC-hh physics potential have not changed, but since the CDR new elements have emerged. On one hand, the current accelerator layout reduced the length to 91km: if a target of 14 T is set for the dipole field (vs 16 in the CDR), the CDR CoM energy is reduced to 80 TeV, justifying a review of the benchmark FCC-hh measurement prospects. A 20 T HTS dipole could nevertheless push the energy to 120 TeV. On the other hand, several aspects of the interplay between the FCC-ee output and the FCC-hh potential were left largely unexplored by the CDR, and a more focused effort is desirable to further emphasize and document the unique physics opportunities offered by the integral FCC programme.

The goals of these activities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Revisiting the 100 TeV proton collider physics potential to uncover elements not explored for the CDR, as well as determining the potential for lower and higher energy runs.

  2. Investigating further the interplay between energy and precision with regard to the Higgs and EW sectors, both within FCC-hh alone and also complementarily with FCC-ee measurements.
  3. Mapping the FCC-hh discovery potential beyond the sensitivity of FCC-ee, also with a view to driving questions in particle physics such as naturalness.
  4. Extending and deepening our understanding of the role of FCC-hh in revealing the microscopic origins of anomalies that could potentially be observed at FCC-ee.
  5. Discussing scope and opportunities for dedicated experiments, beyond those with general-purpose detectors

  6. Reviewing possible updates of the reference FCC-hh detector concept and/or performance studies

  7. Much more to be determined at the mini-workshop.

Other contributions, for example new studies of topics in areas not covered in detail by the CDR, such as flavour physics or precision EW measurements, are welcome.

The agenda of this meeting will be defined by the feedback we receive through the comments provided by registered participants: we envisage room for individual contributions to present ongoing or foreseen studies, as well as time for discussion on the general structure of this activity and of the final report, which we expect to submit to the ESPP by the 31 March 2025 deadline.
