Description
Review jointly organized by CERN and Fermilab:
The goal of the review is to assess the status of the R&D program and the plans for future model and prototype activities to reach a “ready to build” point in the next few years. In particular the review shall concentrate on the first two Phases of this R&D effort focusing on the following items:
Phase 1: Results achieved and lessons learned from the first single aperture, 2-m long 11 T dipole demonstrator tested at FNAL in June 2012. Among the issues to review, we suggest the following list, without excluding any other point the review committee may find appropriate to investigate:
a. Is the choice of conductor/cable, coil and mechanical structure as well as fabrication process technically sound?
b. Was any problem encountered during construction or final testing understood? Are such problems addressed properly in view of the next steps?
c. Was the instrumentation sufficient to evaluate fabrication procedure, validate mechanical and magnetic models and demonstrate that the magnet met specifications?
d. Was testing exhaustive and providing good feedback and expectations for future successes?
Phase 2a: Plans for the construction of the first 2-in-1 2-m long 11 T dipole demonstrator in CY13 at FNAL and CERN.
a. Have the lessons learned in the Phase 1 been understood and used?
b. Is FNAL ready to proceed with material procurement and cable, coils and collared coil construction and testing?
c. Is CERN ready to proceed with yoke and mechanical structure procurement and construction?
d. Are plans in place for the insertion, at CERN, of the cold masses into the yoke?
e. Is there a plan for testing of the 2-in-1 magnet at CERN after assembly completion?
Phase 2b: Plans for the construction of the second 2-in-1 2-m long 11 T dipole demonstrator in CY13-CY14 at CERN.
a. Has technology transfer from FNAL to CERN started in earnest?
b. Have the lessons learned in the Phase 1 been used?
c. Have plans been made for development and decision making process of any possible alternative design for coils and/or mechanical structure?
d. Are plans ready for CERN to proceed with coils and cold masses material procurement, construction and testing?
