CERN Winter School on Supergravity, Strings and Gauge Theories

This Winter School on Strings, Supergravity and Gauge Theories will take place at CERN , Geneva, from Monday February 9 to Friday February 13, 2009. It is organized by the CERN TH group .
The school is an analytic continuation of a series of schools organized in the framework of the former EC-RTN network "Constituents, Fundamental Forces and Symmetries of the Universe", hosted by CERN. This event is primarily meant for training of Ph.D. students and young postdoc researchers and will consist of general lectures in the mornings and working group sessions in the afternoons. Previous schools in this series were organized in 2005 at SISSA in Trieste, and in 2006 , 2007 and 2008 at CERN, Geneva. Other similar schools have been organized in the past by the former related RTN network "The Quantum Structure of Spacetime and the Geometric Nature of Fundamental Interactions". This year the school is not funded by the European Union. The school is funded by the CERN Theory Group, and the Arnold Sommerfeld Center of Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich. These four lectures will provide a broad-brush, pedagogical overview of the present ideas on Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics at the TeV scale, and what the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can say about them. The target audience are PhD students and young postdocs in string theory, with only a basic knowledge of particle phenomenology. The plan of the lectures is the following: 1) critical review of the SM and of Higgs boson searches; 2) bottom-up approaches to BSM physics; 3) supersymmetry at the TeV scale; 4) other ideas for the TeV scale. These lectures will discuss the application of ads/cft techniques to condensed matter systems. After motivating this endeavor, I will review the basic features of the ads/cft correspondence that will be used. I will review the physics of spectral functions and how they can be computed via AdS/CFT. Holographic superconductors will be discussed.
