LHC Lumi Days 2012
TH Theory Conference Room
CERN
Following the successful 2011 meeting, and in view of the progress made in 2011 both in the determination of the LHC luminosity, and in successfully exploiting this increased accuracy in physics analysis, we propose a new edition of LHC lumidays.
A list of useful references and documents of relevance for the workshop can be found here, and the proceedings of the first edition are available from
http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1347440
To subscribe to the workshop mailing list, go to

Proceedings
Speakers should write-up their contributions (1 paper per talk, no page limit but recommended length approx. 5 pages) by using the JACoW templates.
All papers (format ps and word or LATeX with images, no pdf files) are to be uploaded directly the indico timetable by 2nd of April at the latest.

Session 1: Theoretical and experimental prospects and challenges TH Theory Conference Room
TH Theory Conference Room
CERN
1) assessment of the impact of the 2011 luminosity determinations on the physics programme: (a) W/Z/top cross sections, (b) total cross sections
2) status of indirect measurements of luminosity: (a) lum-independent total Xsection, (b) pp->pp lept lept
3) prospects for 2012: physics-driven requirements for further improvements in the absolute luminosity measurement, experimental and PDF systematics for the precise determination/prediction of cross setion ratios at 8 and 7 tev
4) status, needs and interest in luminosity determinations for the p Pb and PbPb runs-

Physics potential of precision measurements of the LHC luminosityThe uncertainty in the determination of the LHC luminosity is rapidly becoming a limiting factor for the analysis and interpretation of many important LHC processes. In this talk first of all we discuss the theoretical accuracy of total cross sections and examine in which cases the luminosity error is or will be dominant. We then review the impact of LHC data in PDF determinations, with enphasis on the effects of the luminosity uncertainty. We explore the requirements for the accuracy of the 2011 luminosity determination from the point of view of standard candle cross section and other important processes. Finally we discuss what we can learn from the accurate measurement of cross section ratios at different center of mass energies for processes like W, ttbar and dijet production.Speaker: Juan Rojo Chacon (CERN)

Session 2a: Luminosity Calibration Results TH Theory Conference Room
TH Theory Conference Room
CERN
Session 2 is organized in two topics:
1) Progress on the Bunch Current Normalization (BCNWG)
2) Direct luminosity calibration results of each LHC experimentFor the second part (luminosity calibration results), each experiment is asked to address the following topics:
* Cover p-p (2.36 & 7 TeV) & Pb-Pb, all scan series since Nov 2010.
- if not final, present status of analysis
* Address all systematics (except from bunch current) or observations:
- reproducibility, hysteresis, XY coupling, beam-beam effects, ...
- pile-up, extrapolation to physics pile-up, ...
- length scale, VDM curve fit procedure, ...
* General prospects and improvements for 2012
* Expected (estimated) systematic uncertainties for the luminosity calibration ratio of 8TeV vs 7TeV center-of-mass energies.
* En passant, express wishes/ideas/opinions for 2012.
* Also: how precise a measurement is expected if a VDM scan is made in early 2012 in normal physics optics ? (the bunch charge, emittance and spacing are probably negotiable)Convener: Massimiliano Ferro-Luzzi (CERN)- 9
