Description

The IPPOG Spring Meeting 2017 will take place in Lisbon at New LIP from Thursday, 20th April until Saturday, 22nd April 2017.

We propose four PANEL topics.

This year we are offering you a chance to participate at 2 panels, as there are two parallel panel sessions each with 2 panels. Please select one panel from both sessions where you can focus on some aspect of a cool outreach activity in your country, experiment or project. We will limit each panel to 16 people to guarantee good presentations of all topics. There will be a new set of panels with every IPPOG meeting, allowing you full coverage over time.

When you register, please select the panel(s) you would like to participate in. The panellists will have time to discuss together on Friday morning to compile their views, advance ideas and prepare for the panel presentation on Saturday.

  1. Exhibitions and Event Highlights: What is happening in the world of exhibitions? Or have you been involved in a special outreach event worthwhile sharing and discussing? Has the associated material been uploaded to the IPPOG Resource Database?
  2. Reaching to New Audiences / Non-conventional Methods: Paving ways to reach out further can be done through engaging with artists, musicians, celebrities, and through looking for the synergies and common points for science and these other aspects of the society. Opening the door to the ‘unconverted’, non-traditional audience has the potential of creating high impact of the image of science in the society. We should discuss how to create an interface to reach out to masses. One way is going from STEM to STEAM.
  3. Impact of Science on Society: There are many studies about the impact of science on economy but one must be careful not to limit the impact on society to impact on economy only and bring full picture of the impact on society, including the true value of knowledge, which is certainly not zero, as could be misunderstood from some studies… It should be carefully discussed what should be measured and why and the metric being employed to measure impact. We will work together also on developing material that addresses the need for the public funding of scientific research, as well as the need for science-based decision making in government.
  4. Impact of Educational Programs for Students and Teachers: Let’s revisit this subject which is becoming more and more popular, discussed and relevant, aiming to summarise the status of the feedback from teachers and students on different IPPOG programmes, the way how to obtain the valuable feedback (suggestion of questionnaire) and how to react on it.

There will be three WORKING GROUP discussions:

This time the working group sessions will be held consecutively on Thursday morning, so please, feel free to join as many as you are interested in and make your choices when registering. The WG reports will be given on Friday morning.

  1. WG on Explaining PP Hot Topics to Lay Audience
  2. WG on MC in New Countries
  3. WG Publications and Speakers Committee (including the preparation for future conferences + lessons learned from past conferences (LHCP, EPS…))

Friday evening we will visit the Exhibition on “Challenges in Particle Physics for the Next Decades” which will be followed by an IPPOG official dinner (accompanying persons are allowed).

Saturday 22nd of April there will be Science March starting from 14:00 http://marchapelaciencia.pt/. IPPOG takes this as an opportunity to collectively participate at the event including having an IPPOG stand from 16:00. More information will follow by email soon.

We are looking forward to see you all in Lisbon in April!
