Description

This meeting is one of activities of GenHET (Gender in High Energy Theory) and will address the latest advancements in string theory and discuss gender-related and equal opportunities issues in this field.

Alongside research talks, there will be discussions and panel sessions focused on gender issues in academia, and a workshop specifically designed to discuss and implement strategies that support women and other underrepresented groups in physics.

Young participants can apply to give a talk before February 29. Additionally, financial support for local expenses is possible upon request. ย See more details on the registration page.

ย

Since any positive change needs the support of the whole community we encourage everyone, scientists of any gender and career stage, ย to participate in this workshop.

Inequity in physics remains a problem despite significant effort, care, and material resources dedicated to addressing it. The tendency to focus change efforts on those who have been historically and intentionally excluded while leaving those who occupy positions of power and privilege, and the structures they maintain, is likely related to the slow progress. In this talk, I present data from multiple studies considering how those who hold intersecting identities of privilege engage with equity efforts. Findings highlight how well-meaning people of privilege frequently undermine equity by failing to acknowledge even obvious inequity, distancing themselves from both the causes and solutions of inequity, minimizing it when they cannot deny or distance, and justifying their own inaction. I end by offering recommendations for both individuals of privilege as well as recommendations for policymakers.

This interactive workshop is designed for those who are committed to addressing inequity in their local environments. While many approaches to equity
are grounded in good intentions, they often fall short in effecting substantial change. This shortfall is largely due to a lack of deep engagement with the complex, systemic nature of institutional inequity and an inadequate theory of change. In this highly
interactive workshop we introduce a framework to help participants analyze and critique common approaches to equity work. Participants will leave with a better understanding of why typical efforts fail and a roadmap to guide more productive efforts. A key
focus of the workshop will be on introspection and dialogue. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own roles in perpetuating inequity and engage in meaningful conversations about strategies for promoting equity at both the departmental
and institutional levels. By the end of the session, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges inherent in equity work and leave with ideas to guide their efforts in making a tangible impact in their respective institutions and research
      groups.
