18th IPPOG meeting, CERN
18th IPPOG meeting at CERN
Our next IPPOG collaboration meeting will take place from 28 to 30 of November 2019 at CERN.
Please note that on the first day the Open Session starting at 13:30 will take place at the conference room at point 01 at the ATLAS site behind the Globe. if you don't know where it is meet Claudia/Steve at the CERN reception at 13:00! On the subsequent days we will be back to Charpak.
ACCESS TO CONFERENCE ROOM THURSDAY!!!
Note that the Open Session on Thursday will take place at the conference room at point 01. There is construction going on at the site so you need to get through level one by the outside stairs. If you are not sure where the conference is or how to get there, then plan to meet Claudia/Steve at the CERN reception around 13:00 to walk over to point 01 together.
ACCESS CARDS TO CERN:
IMPORTANT, in order to enter CERN you now need a valid access card. Here is how to obtain one or renew yours:
1) if all you need is access to the site only during the length of the IPPOG conference, then please contact claudia.marcelloni@cern.ch who will create a VISITORS CARD for you to picked up at the CERN MAIN RECEPTION at BUILDING 33 during working hours.
OR
2) if you need to have access to CERN or CERN services, such as INDICO, throughout the year, then please contact Anita.Bens@cern.ch who will be able to register you on the CERN database as an external and provide you with an access card of one year validity. Once at CERN you will need to pass by BUILDING 55 by ENTRANCE B during working hours to obtain your card.
WIFI:
please connect your device to the “CERN-Visitors” Wi-Fi network.
You should be redirected to the “CERN Visitor Wi-Fi” registration portal. If not (as this is device dependant), open a web browser and you will see the registration portal.
This portal provides registration-free access to a limited number of publicly available CERN websites. For full internet access, you need to agree with the CERN computing rules and register by providing your email address and a mobile phone number to which an access code will be sent by SMS. Once you have received and entered the access code, you will be able to access remote web sites (via http and https on standard tcp ports only) as well as some other authorised services such as e-mail, VPN and SSH.
PANEL DISCUSSION:
IPPOG is celebrating its third anniversary as a collaboration. Considering the many requests to expand the collaboration we have been receiving additionally to the fact that we will have elections for the new chair(s), we suggest as panel discussion the theme "Expanding Borders". The goal of the panel is to discuss how we as a collaboration would like to grow and what different models we could foreseen. We would take advantage of the presence of representatives of ApPEC, NuPECC and iGRAV, to lead this discussion.
WORKING GROUPS:
Please choose two of the following working groups to participate upon registration. The conveners will contact you before hand to discuss the content of the WG:
Group 01 (parallel)
- Explaining Particle Physics to Lay Audiences (Conveners: Dirk Ryckbosch an Thomas Naumann)
- Exhibits and Exhibitions (Conveners: Steven Goldfarb and Hans Peter Beck)
Group 2 (parallel)
- Expanding MC to New Countries (Conveners: Kenneth Cecire and Uta Bilow)

Espace Ballon - Hot Air Balloons Exhibition at Château-d'Oex 15m
The exhibition provides a historical overview and adds a local touch on the discovering of cosmic rays, where the physicist Albert Gockel from Fribourg established first hints in the balloon flights he undertook over a century ago. Experiments carried out at high altitudes, in balloons, airplanes and in high mountain stations, such as the Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat research stations, allowed researchers to detect radioactivity in the atmosphere and to conclude on the existence of cosmic radiation.

ColliderScope: Electronic(s) Music from Collider Physics 15m
If science outreach is about connecting with new audiences, music remains a uniquely accessible form of outreach. However, physics music needn’t be limited to campy parodies. A new project for creating music that is accessible at multiple technical levels will be presented. Using a form of 2D wavetable synthesis, a new form of electronic music uses stereo audio signals, mapped onto an oscilloscope’s X-Y mode, to create 3D images of LHC experiments from the music itself. Both composed and improvised forms of this project are able to reach electronics communities, fans of electronic music, and musicians; and physics departments can revive analog oscilloscopes from storage to create an essentially free outreach display.
Speaker: Lawrence Lee Jr (Harvard University (US)) -
Outreach activities in an art centre 15m
In February 2019 an exhibition called QUANTICA was inaugurated in the Contemporary Culture Centre in Barcelona (CCCB) in collaboration with Arts@CERN. More than 80.000 people have visited the exhibition in 6 months. The Institut de Física d'Altes Energies (IFAE) collaborated with the development of the exhibition and the satellite activities that were offered. The presentation will focus on the experience of developing an interactive installation about particle physics for the exhibition in collaboration with an artist. And also on the lessons learned in the outreach workshops offered in the context of the exhibition. Both experiences made us rethink our approach to outreach in order to adapt to new publics and environments.
Speaker: Sebastián Grinschpun (Institut de Física d'Altes Energies (IFAE))

CAEN Educational: Tools for the young minds! 15m
CAEN realized different modular Educational Kits, mainly based on Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) state of-the-art sensor of light. The Educational Kits, provided with a dedicated Control Software, are modern and flexible platforms for teaching the fundamentals of Statistics, Particles Detection and Nuclear Imaging. Moreover, CAEN developed a series of experiments with different difficulty level, from basic experiments to more complex applications. The idea is to target the experiment depending on the student educational level. With this approach, the experiments proposed can be performed at high school level (grade 11, 12) science classes up to undergraduate physics laboratory and PhD courses.

ALICE Masterclass update 15m
In the beginning of 2019 the Faculty of Physics of the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) received an educational grant of ~1.5 million EUR from the European Union funds within the Horizon 2020 scheme. The ALICE Masterclass is included as one of the tasks of this big project. The Masterclass part foresees funding of a computer scientist (programmer) for ~2 years as well financial support for organization of the Masterclass sessions in Warsaw (including invitations of external scientists) in 2020.
