Description

Since 2013, the University of Michigan has hosted semester research programs for undergraduates at CERN. Students are selected from a diverse mix of universities and embedded in active research programs at the laboratory. Mentors are selected for their leadership skills and their ability to educate and inspire the students. Projects include detector R&D, software development, trigger design and physics analysis on a variety of CERN experiments.

Funding for the students, which covers travel, per diem and a stipend, has come from the University, the Richard Lounsbery Foundation and the United States Mission to the International Organizations in Geneva. An emphasis has been placed on providing opportunities to women and students from other under-served communities and, since 2022, the program has supported placements for students from Ukraine. We present the growing success of the program and describe our current efforts to expand and improve its diverse reach.
