Description

The first three days of the meeting (January 17 to 19) will deal with the statistical issues related to discovery claims in search experiments, concentrating on those at the LHC. Topics to be dealt with will include model selection methods, inclusion of the effects of systematics, the 'Look Elsewhere Effect', practicalities of estimating significance, whether 5 sigma should be a universal criterion for discovery, sensitivity of searches, experience from earlier experiments, etc. There will be invited talks by Physicists and Statisticians, and also time for contributed papers and discussion.

This meeting is a follow up to the PHYSTAT-LHC meeting at CERN in 2007 ( http://phystat-lhc.web.cern.ch/phystat-lhc/2008-001.pdf ) and to the recent Banff Workshop on statistical issues related to discovery claims (see http://www.birs.ca/events/2010/5-day-workshops/10w5068 , and a report in a recent CERN Courier - see http://cerncourier.com/cws/article/cern/44115 ).

The last day of the meeting, ย January 20, will be dedicated to a 1-day Workshop focused on unfolding detector resolution from experimental distributions.ย Again there will be a series of invited and contributed talks.

Following PHYSTAT, on Jan 21 there will be at CERN a meeting on "Progress on Multivariate Data Analysis with TMVA". For details and to register to this additional event, see
http://indico.cern.ch/event/tmva_workshopย .

A useful reading list is attached below as "material".

A block of rooms at the CERN Hostel has been reserved. They will be kept until December 13. To request a room, please send mail to our secretary,ย Anastasia.Dolya@cern.ch
