Program of activities: 1/Weekly kickoff meetings We propose to kickoff each week with an opportunity for (almost) everyone to review what they are doing. The Monday afternoons will be allocated to 10' presentations by the newcomers of the week: just few slides to introduce your latest work or to propose discussion topics. No need for discussion right away, there is the rest of the week for that. If some of the topics that emerge from the presentations are deemed interesting, then there will be the possibility to schedule a more complete presentation, or a discussion session, during the week. Please send your request to speak to the weekly conveners (see below) 2/ Every morning there will be a joint coffee-party at 10am in the TH common room. They should be the place of informal lively discussions. 3/ Topical discussions: Each week, two afternoons or so will be reserved for topical discussions. Any suggestion is welcome: e-mail the conveners. So far we have identified the following topics: week 1: PDFs, as part of the PDF4LHC meeting that will take place on August 6th-7th week 2: (i) initial-state radiation and underlying event, (ii) parton shower-matrix element matching week 3: (i) 4th generation, (ii) SUSY breaking week 4: composite Higgs/top 4/ Conveners: Weekly conveners will have the responsibility of the smooth running of the Institute. They will decide on the talks and discussion sessions. All requests should be directly addressed to them. Week 1+2: Michelangelo Mangano (michelangelo.mangano@cern.ch) + Stefano Frixione (stefano.frixione@cern.ch) + Bryan Webber (webber@hep.phy.cam.ac.uk) + Mike Seymour (michael.seymour@cern.ch) Week 3+4: Gia Dvali (georgi.dvali@cern.ch) + Christophe Grojean (christophe.grojean@cern.ch) + James Wells (james.wells@cern.ch) 5/ TH colloquia: There will be four TH colloquia organized jointly as part the regular activities of the TH unit and the Institute activities. August 5th: R. Thorne on "PDFs" August 12th: G. Salam on "jet algorithms" August 19th: M. Schmaltz on "susy breaking" August 26th: G. Gabadaze on "new state of matter in white dwarfs" Registration: the number of applications so far has already vastly exceeded the maximum number of participants we can accept. Registrations are therefore closed. We expect to confirm acceptance to the selected participants within 2 weeks. The aim of this Institute is to bring together theorists and phenomenologists interested in all different aspects of LHC physics (QCD, event simulations, electroweak physics, BSM theories) for an opportunity to review and discuss the first LHC data. The schedule will in general contain a few talks or planned discussions in the morning hours, followed by informal discussions and work in the afternoon hours. The regular TH seminar series in the afternoons will also have some talks relevant to this TH Institute. Details of the organizational structure and program will be fixed later. The first two weeks will be mostly devoted to SM backgrounds, BSM signals will be discussed during the third week and the fourth week will be mostly focussed on model-building aspects. Monte Carlo tools will be presented in parallel during the whole time.
