The 9th International Workshop on Top Quark Physics TOP 2016 was held in the city of Olomouc, Czech Republic from 19th to 23th September.

Twitter :: Pictures at Flickr!

The workshop will bring together the community of experimental and theoretical physicists working on top quark physics. The 2016 edition will be especially focused on the new era of measurements and discovery potential of top quarks at the Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider.

The workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of the latest results and searches from experiments as well as the most recent theoretical developments and an outlook on top-quark physics at future colliders. The programme will consist of plenary presentations, a poster session and 'question and answers' sessions, targeting young researchers. A significant fraction of the workshop time will be devoted to discussions, with a dedicated Young Scientist Forum.

The goal of the workshop is to provide a comprehensive picture of top-quark physics and a forum where experimentalists and theorists can discuss the interpretation of top quark results and plan future measurements.

A detailed agenda will be released soon through the conference website. The  talks will start on Monday morning and finish Friday noon. The excursion will take place on Wednesday afternoon.

To provide young physicists the opportunity to contribute to the scientific programme, a Young Scientist Forum with short presentations will be organized, followed by a Poster Session, the best presentations and posters will be awarded a prize.
We ask experimentalists and theorists to submit abstracts for posters or talks in the Young Scientist Forum, experimentalists to their respective experiments and theorists directly using Indico.

The event will take place in the venue of NH Collections Hotel in the historical city of Olomouc in the heart of the Moravia region in the Czech Republic. Olomouc is a thriving university city of immense historical heritage, with monuments on the list of UNESCO.

We look forward to seeing you in Olomouc in September 2016!

Top Signatures From Composite Higgs Theories 10m

Many compelling theories to address the Higgs hierarchy problem predict strong interactions between the top and a sector of New Physics. In minimal composite Higgs models (CHM), the top interactions with a BSM strongly-interacting sector give the main contribution to trigger the EWSB and generate a light mass for the pseudo-NG Higgs. This implies that new composite states (VLQ top-partners, composite vector resonances, new composite scalars) dominantly interact with third-generation quarks and, when produced at colliders, generate top quarks in the final state. I will indicate interesting signatures involving top quarks for CHM discovery/test at the LHC and future colliders

Search for single production of vector-like quarks decaying into a W-boson and a b-quark at 13 TeV 10m

Search for singly produced vector-like quarks decaying into Wb with one lepton final states is reported using data collected by ATLAS at 13 TeV. The search employs a high-transverse momentum b-tagged jet opposite to the lepton, forward jet originating from the initial-state quark radiating off a W-boson, and no other jet activity in the central region of the detector.

Multilepton signatures from tZq interactions in the SM and top-FCNC 10m

The associated production of a single top quark and a Z boson (tZq) is a rare process predicted by the standard model (SM). Being sensitive to the top-Z and the trilinear gauge couplings, it constitutes an important probe of the SM. While tZq has a moderate cross section, its yield can be enhanced by flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions. The observation of top-FCNCs, which are highly suppressed in the SM, would be a clear sign of new physics. Moreover, by setting limits in a model-independent way on the abundance of these processes, one can exclude many new physics models. In this talk, we discuss multilepton signatures coming from a tZq interaction, either in the context of the SM or arising from an FCNC interaction. Both analyses are battling the same backgrounds and have therefore a similar analysis structure. Using multivariate discriminants in multilepton final states on either 8 TeV or the 13 TeV datasets, an observation or exclusion limit is set.

The impact of the photon PDF and electroweak corrections on $t \bar t$ distributions 10m

We discuss the impact of EW corrections on differential distributions in top-quark pair production at the LHC and future hadron colliders, focusing on the effects of initial-state photons. Performing a calculation at Next-to-Leading Order QCD+EW accuracy, we investigate in detail the impact of photon-initiated channels on central values as well as PDF and scale uncertainties, both at order $\alpha_s\alpha$ and $\alpha_s^2\alpha$. We present predictions at 13 and 100 TeV, and provide results for the 8 TeV differential measurements performed by ATLAS and CMS. A thorough comparison of results obtained with the NNPDF2.3QED and CT14QED PDF sets is performed. While contributions due to the photon PDF are negligible with CT14QED, this is not the case for NNPDF2.3QED, where such contributions are sizeable and show large PDF uncertainties. On the one hand, we show that differential observables in top-pair production, in particular top-quark and $t\bar t$ rapidities, can be used to improve the determination of the photon PDF within the NNPDF approach. On the other hand, with current PDF sets, we demonstrate the necessity of including EW corrections and photon-induced contributions for a correct determination of both the central value and the uncertainties of theoretical predictions. The present content is based on arXiv:1606.01915 [hep-ph].

The search for Standard Model four-top-quark production at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV 10m

A combined search for standard model four-top-quark production in the single lepton plus jets and dilepton channels will be presented. The analysis utilises the 2015 dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 fb$^{-1}$. A scheme based on a boosted decision tree algorithm is used to select signal and suppress backgrounds. An upper limit on the cross section of four-top-quark production will be presented.

Searches for ttbar resonances with the CMS detector at 13 TeV 10m

We present the most recent results on searches for new massive resonances decaying to a top-antitop quark pair with the CMS detector at the LHC.
Searches are performed by measuring the invariant mass distribution of the ttbar system, both in semileptonic and fully-hadronic final states, using the data collected by the CMS experiment in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV in 2015, the first year of the LHC Run-2.
In order to maximize the analysis sensitivity for BSM resonances with a mass above the TeV scale, dedicated techniques are used to identify the decay of highly-boosted top quarks: these methods include the identification of poorly isolated prompt leptons overlapping with a b-jet and the use of a top-tagging algorithm to reconstruct fully-merged jets with substructure properties.
No significant excess is observed in the data compared to the expected SM background and exclusion limits are set on the cross section of a ttbar resonance in different BSM scenarios. Finally, we discuss how these first results with 13 TeV data complement and possibly improve the exclusion limits for resonant ttbar production set in Run-1.

Measurement of the inclusive ttbar production cross section in ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV and determination of the top quark pole mass at D0. 10m

The inclusive cross section of top quark-antiquark pairs produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV is measured in lepton$+$jets and dilepton decay channels. The data sample corresponds to 9.7 fb${}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Employing multivariate analysis techniques we measure the cross section in the two decay channels and we perform a combined cross section measurement. For a top quark mass of 172.5 GeV, we measure a combined inclusive top quark-antiquark pair production cross section of $ \sigma_{t\bar{t}} = 7.26 \pm 0.13\, ({stat.}) ^{+0.57}_{-0.50}\,({syst.})$ pb which is consistent with standard model predictions. We also perform a likelihood fit to the measured and predicted top quark mass dependence of the inclusive cross section, which yields a measurement of the pole mass of the top quark. The extracted value is $m_t = 172.8 \pm 1.1\,(theo.)\,^{+3.2}_{-3.4}\,(exp.)$ GeV.

Top Quark Mass Calibration for Monte-Carlo Event Generators 10m

The most precise top quark mass measurements use direct reconstruction methods, determining the top mass parameter of a Monte Carlo event generator, m_t^MC. Due to hadronization and parton shower dynamics, relating m_t^MC to a field theory mass is difficult. We present a calibration procedure to determine this relation by exploiting hadron level QCD predictions for observables closely related to reconstruction. We demonstrate the procedure using fits to the 2-Jettiness distribution in e+e- annihilation and show the calibration results for m_t^MC in Pythia 8.205 for the MSR mass at the scale 1 GeV and the pole mass at NNLL+NLO accuracy. To the extend that a given MC makes consistent descriptions of experimental data for e+e- versus pp collisions our method may be used to calibrate measurements of m_t^MC in current LHC and Tevatron analyses in terms of field theory mass schemes.

Measurement of the tchannel single topquark and topantiquark differential crosssections in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector 10m

Differential crosssection measurements of tchannel single topquark production are presented. They use 20.2 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment in proton–proton collisions in the LHC at a centreofmass energy of 8 TeV. Differential crosssections as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of both the top quark and the top antiquark have been measured at both parton and particle level. The transverse momentum and rapidity differential crosssections of the scattered light jet have been measured at particle level. All measurements are compared to different Monte Carlo predictions as well as to available fixedorder QCD calculations.

Measurements of the charge asymmetry in topquark pair production in the dilepton final state at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector 10m

Measurements of the top–antitop quark pair production charge asymmetry in the dilepton c hannel are presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1 from pp collisions at a centerofmass energy of √s = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector. Inclusive and differential measurements as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum, and longitudinal boost of the ttbar system are performed both in the full phase space and in a fiducial phase space closely matching the detector acceptance. Two observables are studied: A(ll) based on the selected leptons and A(tt) based on the reconstructed topquark pair final state. The inclusive asymmetries are measured in the full phase space to be A(ll) = 0.008 ± 0.006 and A(tt) = 0.021 ± 0.016, which are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Measurements of CP violation asymmetries in Bhadron decays using top quark events collected by the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at 8 TeV 10m

Top pair events provide a source of bbbar pairs, which can be used to probe CP violation in heavyflavour mixing and decay. In events where one of the W bosons decays leptonically to an electron or muon, the charge of the W boson can be used to determine unambiguously the flavour charge of the accompanying b quark at the time of its production. In cases where the b also decays semileptonically to a muon, this sample allows to probe two CP asymmetries constructed with the charge signs of the W and the soft muon. The first measurement of the CP asymmetries in bbar from top pair decays is hence presented using the data collected with the ATLAS detector during the 8 TeV run of the LHC.
