The focus of the School is on the most advanced technologies in the fields of semiconductors, very deep submicron and 3D technologies, nanotechnology, advanced packaging and interconnects, telecommunications, real-time signal processing, filtering and massively parallel computing and on the Physics motivations that require confronting these technogical challenges for building the needed new instruments. These Physics motivations are reviewed both in dedicated lectures as well as in all the more technology-based lectures. The school will provide lectures and Lab work in a variety of cross-disciplinary example applications drawn from the exploration of distant Universe, through Medical imaging of the human body, to exploration of the elementary particle world. Lectures on technical developments and science overviews will be given by experts from Academia and Industry, alongside with hands-on Lab sessions with demonstrators and subject specific master-classes on science & technology.

The morning sessions from 9 am to 1pm will be dedicated to the lectures held in general in the main auditorium of the Physics Institute. The afternoon sessions will be devoted to the Lab sessions from 2 to 5pm held in the USP Campus at the IAG, IF, IME Institutes and the Polytechnic School as well as some Labs at the School of Medicine. From 5.20 to 6.30 pm there will be science and/or technology overview lectures. All the days (except Sunday January 29) will follow this basic schedule (see present timetable).

The school will be held from Monday January 23rd (morning) to Friday February 3rd (end of the afternoon), with a break on Sunday where people will enjoy a day free in Sao Paulo or surroundings as they like. The program of the Computing and Practical Labs will be prepared in a booklett format that will be available on line for the attendants one week before the start of the School. A brochure with the complete description of the Lab sessions will be distributed at the registration of the School.

NEW: The current list of Lab sessions with the title of the Lab, the names of the organizers and a brief abstract can be found in the file attached at the end of this overview. It will be kept updated until the start of the School => stay tuned

As traditionally in this school series, the attendants are expected to provide a Poster. The Posters will be exposed during the full duration of the School in the Entrance Hall of the Physics Department. The last day a session will be dedicated to the presentation of Posters by each of the attendants. The posters will be as well included in the School website at the end of the School. Note that some of the Lectures will be opened to a larger audience. This is in particular the case for the two first days of the School and for some of the overview Lectures given at the end of the day. More information on this last point will come soon.

All the lectures will be recorded on YOUTUBE if agreement by the lecturer and will be held at the Abraão de Moraes auditorium apart a few sessions that will be held in other auditorium of USP: on January 26 the plenary morning session will take place at the Auditorium of the Electric Department of the Politechnic School at USP, and on January 28, the plenary morning session will take place at the Auditorium of Institut of Radiology at the School of Medicine (FM-USP).

        The Astronomy (IAG) Institute: Present Scientific and Technological Programme and perspectives 30m

        The Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences (IAG) is one of the leading research and academic Institute in Brazil. Following the creation of its three departments in 1972, Graduate Programs were implemented for Astronomy (1973), Geophysics (1974), and Meteorology (1975). The BS Courses in Meteorology and Geophysics were opened in 1977 and 1986, respectively, and later completed by the BS in Astronomy (2009). The corresponding research activities include collaboration mainly with Europe, USA and Latin America.

        The School of Medicine at USP: FM USP 30m

        USP operates 4 hospitals, among them University of São Paulo Medical School Public Hospital, the largest hospital complex in Latin America and the major teaching and training site for the University School of Medicine - it is considered one of the best health care institutions in Latin America . The Faculdade de Medicina da USP develops, along with the Hospital das Clínicas (HC), scientific researches and standardizes the new techniques and methods of diagnostics, allowing its implementation on the patients’ assistance in the HC. The researchers’ education, the students’ and health professionals’ training are activities attributed to the Medical Investigation Laboratories (LIM). In all, there are 62 LIM Laboratories.

        The Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, part of the University of Sao Paulo, is constituted of four departments:DCC (Department of Computer Science), MAE (Department of Statistics), MAP (Department of Applied Mathematics) and MAT (Department of Mathematics). Particle and nuclear physics, solid state, and low temperature physics, have a long tradition at IF.       Prof. Giordano at the University of Bari, Italy is Cosmic ray physics expert. Actually working in the Fermi NASA mission for gamma ray exploration of the universe.
      Also working on the development of a Silicon Photomltipliers camera for VeryHighEnergy astroparticle application Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). This lecture will present the CTA experiment and the new developments that led to the application of the SiPMT technology to build cameras based on this technology instead of the Multi-Anode PMTs.
      His lecture will be complemented by a dedicated Hands on Lab.

        Lodovico Ratti is Professor in Electronics at the University of Pavia, Italy. This is one of the key places in Italy and indeed in Europe in Microelectronics in close link with Bergamo University, for developing and building advanced ASICs especially for the Front-End design for the signal processing of Pixel based devices.
        His lecture on advanced embedded signal processing for pixel devices will be complemented by an Hands on Lab he is organizing jointly with Bergamo and Pavia teams involved in the RD53 international R&D collaboration led by CERN and LBL-Berkeley. Here below attached the abstracts

      Dr Daniel Elvira is a Scientist at Fermi National Lab, Physics and Detector Simulation Group Leader (SCD-FNAL), Scientific Computing Simulation Department Head (SCD-FNAL) and CMS Department Head (SCD-FNAL). He is part of the worldwide collaboration developing the next generation toolkit based on GEANT simulation framework.
      GEANT firmware was developed by /for Particle Physics at CERN and has been increasingly used in many other domains of research and of applied life. It is now being adapted to the new HPC and MPC frameworks.
      The content of Dr Elvira's lecture is summarized in the abstract in the file here below. This lecture is complemented by a computer- aided Lab, co-organized with Dr Guilherme Lima (FNAL scientist). The Lab abstract is also included in that file.
