Welcome to the 16th International Workshop on Top Quark Physics (TOP2023)

The 16th International Workshop on Top Quark Physics (TOP 2023) will be held in person, from September 24 to 29, 2023, in Traverse City, Michigan, USA.

TOP 2023 brings together experimentalists and theorists to present and discuss the latest developments in top-quark physics. This year's meeting will be hosted by North American institutions on Lake Michigan.

Young scientists are especially encouraged to participate, and there will be a poster session as well as a block of short plenary talks in the "Young Scientist Forum'',  allowing them to present their work.

        Beyond the narrow-width limit for off-shell and boosted differential top quark decays 10m

        The two canonical approaches to describing top quark decay are on the one hand calculations in the narrow-width (NW) limit and on the other hand full off-shell fixed-order computations. The NW limit allows one to factorise the production and the decay process and thus to treat the top quark as an on-shell particle such that the spin-density formalism can be applied. Full off-shell fixed-order calculations take into account both resonant and non-resonant effects as well as non-factorisable contributions, as a result the computations are more involved, in particular when including QCD corrections.

        In our work we pursue a factorised approach that includes the spin-density formalism and allows for the description of off-shell effects of the top quark within the effective field theory treatment of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), which thus can also be used for resummation. Our approach relies on boosted top quark production, where the decay products are in the top quark resonance region. In this talk I will introduce the theoretical ingredients to describe top quark decay in SCET. I will then illustrate at tree-level the calculation of two differential observables using this framework.

        When including QCD corrections we pursue a semi-analytic approach, where effects related to the top quark decay can be treated numerically while the resummation can still be performed in an analytic setting.

        Uncovering New Higgs Bosons in the ATLAS Analysis of Differential t-tbar Cross-sections 10m

        ATLAS found that none of the various Standard Model simulations used by them can describe the differential lepton distributions measured in their ttbar analysis reasonably well. Therefore, we take the possibility that this measurement might have new physics contamination and study a benchmark model motivated by existing indications for di-photon resonances: A heavy scalar decays into two lighter Higgs bosons with masses of 152 GeV and 95 GeV. Subsequently, the lighter Higgs bosons decay to WW and bb, respectively. We find that in this case, the description of data is very much improved, resulting in a preference for the new physics model over the Standard Model hypothesis of at least 5.6 sigma.

        Optimizing Entanglement and Bell Inequality Violation in Top Anti-Top Events 10m

        When a top and an anti-top are produced at colliders their spins are correlated. Furthermore, when the top and anti-top system is interpreted as a quantum state, the system can exhibit entanglement and can violate Bell's inequality. Treating the system as a quantum state requires using the same axes to measure the top and anti-top spins in all events. In practice, most studies allow the axes to vary event-by-event, such that observables are angular-averaged. This averaging introduces a dependence on the spin axes that were chosen. In this work, we show that the basis which diagonalizes the spin-spin correlations is optimal for maximizing spin correlations, entanglement, and the violation of Bell's inequality. Since detecting violations of Bell's inequality will likely require the full dataset of the high-luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider, optimizing detection is crucial.
